French sculptor Sosno and architect Rytis Daukantas transformed one of his sculptures into an Art Gallery building. It is unusual architectural proposal even for an art space. To better understand nature of this “inhabited sculpture” we must familiarize with artis’s biography and his philosophy.

Sacha Sosno (born 1937) is French artist of New Realism movement and is one of the legends of so called “School of Nice”. His works has been termed as the art of obliteration. All of his sculptures and paintings are masked by empty or full space, inviting the viewer to use his own imagination. He seeks to obliterate or distort. It is the audience who has to use imagination to construct the full image of an object. Whatever it is some painting, sculpture or building, people have to finish creating it in their minds.

The concept of “inhabited sculpture” was born in mid-80s when Sosno alongside architect Yves Bayard (1935-2008) started to develop various projects combing sculpture and architecture. One of his most recognizable works is 26-meter high monumental sculpture-building “Tete carree” which by now become one of the landmarks in French city of Nice.

SOSNO Art Gallery building is total 600 m² with unique gallery space, conference hall, souvenir store and multimedia room. “Inhabited sculpture” building is 22 meters high and has 6 floors with a basement. The biggest challenge was to convert sculpture into a building and maintain as much useful space as the form of the sculpture allows. The scale had to harmonically integrate into surrounded landscape.

It was crucial to create a construction which would successfully resist the power of Mediterranean winds. Everything is organized around 22 meters high vertical steel skeleton. The structure also holds a cantilever which itself is divided into four levels. The right and left wings of cantilever are serving as a primary gallery. The space here is fragmented into four sections. On the 6th floor we find a small balcony. From there visitors can observe the bellow and make visual connection with three levels from one standing spot simultaneously. Some spaces has a multipurpose use and can be transformed. The cantilever is covered with a glass along with wooden louver which provides daylight. All the time visitors can enjoy magnificent views of nearby seaside and mountains. The second floor has a 52 m² conference hall for 45 persons with staff room. First floor (basement) has a small 41m² souvenir store. All other facilities are included. Aluminium sculpture firmly covers steel structure making it integral. The building is fully adapted for disabled persons. An arrow -shaped parking space and wheelchair ramp create easy access for handicap visitors. Inside there is an elevator and comfortable rest room.

Obliteration interrupts the silence of the image. Architecture as Art must find a new kind of public, another audience.

SOSNO美术馆高22米，共600平方米，6层并带有地下室。具有独特的展示空间，会议厅，纪念品商店和多媒体室。最大的挑战就是在这样的形体下保证尽可能多的可用空间。高22米的横向斜钢骨架有四层空间，可以抵御住来自地中海的风。6楼有观景小阳台。表皮覆盖着玻璃和木制百叶窗。阳光可以进入建筑，游客们可以饱览周围山脉和海洋的胜景。2楼有45人座52平米办公室。一楼有41平米纪念品商店。铝雕塑的内部是结实的钢结构。同时设计考虑无障碍设计，有残疾人车位和轮椅坡道。同时建筑配置了电梯和舒适的休息室。

一鸣惊人。艺术建筑的新征途。
