西湖大学是一所社会力量举办、国家重点支持的新型高等学校，2018年2月14日正式获教育部批准设立，举办方是杭州市西湖教育基金会。它位于杭州西湖区，拥有先进的学术设施、实验室、办公室、体育设施、食堂以及学生和教师宿舍。

The new Westlake University solidifies China’s position as a global leader in scientific and technological research. Founded by a private initiative of some of the country’s top scientists and businesspeople, Westlake University is a new type of research institution on par with the world’s leading universities. Located in the west of Hangzhou, the campus houses state of the art academic facilities, laboratories, offices, sports facilities, canteens, and housing for an international body of students and faculty.

西湖大学的设计回应了不同规模体量的需求，大到城市规模级别的总体规划，小到独栋建筑。校园场地以一系列同心环为特色，分别为学术环、水环和生活环，这些同心环在场地布局和概念两个层面上将校园组织起来。

The design for the Westlake campus addresses a range of scales and needs, from its urban- scale master plan to individual buildings. The site is defined as a series of concentric rings that organize the campus both physically and conceptually: the Academic Core, the Water Loop, and the Living Loop.

生命科学学院、理学院、医学院和工程学院分别坐落于独立建筑中。这些由错落有致的体量构成的建筑群拥有独特的预制混凝土框架结构，同时每栋建筑的外立面均拥有独特的色彩装饰和定制竖框图案。这些具有鲜明特色的庭院式建筑通过学术环路相互联结，旨在促进学科间的交流与跨学科合作。

The School of Life Science, the School of Science, the School of Medicine, and the School of Engineering are housed in separate buildings. Composed of staggered volumes, all the buildings share the same distinctive precast concrete frame, while each façade is uniquely detailed with colorful accents and custom mullion patterns. These articulated courtyard buildings are interlocked with the Academic Loop in order to promote connection and interdisciplinary exchange.

学术环是大学密集的知识和社交核心。这个充满活力的三层通高空间穿过其所连接的建筑物，并提供了全景视野。它的圆形形式包含公共空间、会议空间、研讨室和实验室。设计刻意将圆弧留作未完成——营造出开放的氛围，为未来发展预留了可能性。

The Academic Loop is the dense intellectual and social core of the university. The dynamic, triple- height space offers panoramic vistas through and into the buildings it connects. Its circular form contains communal spaces, meeting spaces, seminar rooms, and laboratories. The design deliberately leaves the circular arc incomplete – evoking a sense of openness and possibility for future development.

学术环的中心是大学的中央公园——一个适合静修、沉思和社交的美丽花园。坐落于花园中央的学术堂是一座大型礼堂，既是毕业典礼和学术活动的正式场所，又能化身为举办音乐会与文化活动的热闹空间。

At the center of the loop is the University’s central park—a beautiful garden for retreat, contemplation and socialization. Set amidst the garden is the Academic Hall, a large auditorium that serves as the formal venue for graduations and academic ceremonies, and regularly transforms into a lively space for concerts and cultural occasions.

校园周围环绕着一条宁静的水道，上面的十二座桥就像车轮上的辐条一样，将校园与葱郁的生活环紧密相连，生活环内错落分布着供师生居住的独立住宅楼。而生活环外围的商店、食堂与体育设施，则让校园变身为一座活力聚落。

The campus is encircled by a tranquil waterway. Twelve bridges, like spokes on a wheel, connect the campus to the verdant Living Loop where freestanding residential buildings for students and faculty are located. Surrounded by shops, canteens, and sports facilities, the outer ring is a vibrant hub of private and social life.

校园设计以中心区域为引力核心展开构思。它并非优先考虑最短路径，而是引导人们穿行于各具特色的环形空间，提供多元体验、激发灵感与促进交流。偶然的相遇往往能点燃新的创意与思维方式。

The design of the campus is conceived from the center as a gravitational core. Rather than prioritizing short routes, it encourages and guides movement through the rings – each with its own character – offering diverse experiences, opportunities for inspiration, and vibrant exchange. Serendipitous encounters spark new ideas and ways of thinking.

校园融合了自然意趣与人文灵感：学术礼堂既举办讲座又承办音乐会，成为区域内领先的文化地标，更将外部活力引入西湖大学的核心区域，模糊了学术生活与社交生活的边界。

The campus combines inspiration from nature as well as culture: The Academic Hall hosts lectures as well as concerts, making it a leading cultural venue in the region and inviting life from outside into the center of Westlake University, blurring the boundaries between academic and social life.
