Shadow Bath

暗影是受新加坡可持续光照节委托而安装在新加坡海湾上附近的装置。整个节日以“光影礼赞”为主题，旨在探讨人工照明与可持续发展间的关系。对此Loop.pH设计团队利用节能led灯和印有黑色花纹的透明膜打造出一个可观的光影装置。

装置的充气透明膜造型为纯粹的环状，该造型在结合膜上的黑色花纹，看起来相当迷幻。当中心灯光亮起，该装置的光影便远远的投射出去，并结合播放的音乐吸引市民前来观赏。轻质的充气透明膜在人力的推动下回轻轻颤动，随之光影也发生摇摆。

Shadow Bath is a luminous pneumatic bathhouse commissioned for iLight Marina Bay in Singapore, Asia’s leading sustainable light festival. For the fourth edition the festival’s curatorial team invited artists to respond to the theme of “In Praise of Shadows”, inspired by Junichiro Tanizaki’s seminal essay of the same title. Challenging the obsession that brighter is better and seeking to reframe perceptions of light and sustainability. Our studio’s response was to create an experience that works with the sun during the day to cast huge patterns across the landscape, whilst during nightfall a low power LED light source illuminates from within.

The Shadow Bath is mapped with a black optical pattern and inflated with light & air, casting psychedelic patterns inside and out, bathing visitors in shades of dark. Its inflated form is a pure mathematical toroidal space, the geometry of the universe. It is said that the torus defines and underpins all structure, both at the atomic and planetary level. Its form is defined by two simple parameters: the radius of the torus and the radius of the tube. Space itself is not flat, but curved. In particle physics, the torus is known to provide the best environment within which to accelerate particles as it can hold and route the plasma formed by such machines in an efficient manner.

Visitors were invited to bathe around the bathhouse for a meditative light & sound experience as it throws its moire shadows far and wide. Video clip on Vimeo

The taught membrane becomes a resonator where music by artist Ansuman Biswas vibrates the inflated space. The soundscape was created on a hang drum, an instrument similar in geometry to the toroidal shadow bath.

Vel02

为了倡导健康城市，Loop.pH受台湾新光人寿保险委托，设计了壮观的光装置Vel02。这个装置现场还配有自行车，可供市民在装置的赛道上骑车，让市民体验绿色出行，向市民宣传绿色出行理念，以期让市民降低减少汽车出行，减少对全球空气污染。

整个装置两侧半圆的造型很像热带树木的片状根部，中间则是并列的两圈自行车起伏坡道。无论是两侧的造型还是中间的赛道，都安装了彩色照明灯。此外装置上还能根据安装在自己身上的空气质量传感器得到实时空气数据，再反映到灯光的色彩中，通过彩色照明灯从绿色到红色的变化光色对市民进行空气污染预警。

Vel02 is a spectacular installation of light that celebrates active and healthy cities, launched in Taipei in 2016.

A dynamic light commission from Shin Kong Life staged during Velo-City Global 2016, the world’s most important cycling conference hosted in Taipei.
People physically interact with the installation through cycling at speed, activating a lighting system that communicates live and local air quality. A dynamic wooden branching structure grows from the BMX pump track, reminiscent of trees and the tubular networks in our lungs and pulsing with coloured light.

The installation uses an air quality sensor provided by Change London to collect the fluctuating data that measures six different air pollutants from three gasses and three different particle sizes. It then translates the data from the sensor into seven different breathing rhythms and colours of light, passing from green to a dark red for dangerous levels of pollutants and creating a kind of warning system based on the international standard Air Quality Index.

Visitors to the installation are provided with bikes and was open to people of all ages and abilities. Encouraging citizens to take up cycling in a fun and social environment could help Taiwan tackle its air pollution issues.

Global air pollution

Air pollution is a huge problem in Taipei, as lung cancer has increased 2.3 times and asthma in children has doubled in the last two decades. Densely populated by motor vehicles, schemes to adopt cleaner modes of urban mobility are essential.

Living with air pollution has become a reality for millions of people around the world, and latest research from the World Health Organisation describes the situation as a ‘public health emergency’, causing 3.3 million premature deaths across the globe every year. A combination of transport fumes and toxic gases from chemical industrial processes have contributed to the significant rise in air pollution, leaving approximately 7 out of 8 of the urban population living in cities where air pollution is higher than the levels WHO recommends.

As well as causing localised environmental effects, air pollution can travel long distances, and plays an important role in the earth’s atmospheric circulation, contributing to the global weather system. This highlights that air pollution is not just an environmental issue, but a political one too.

Cynthia Wu, Director of Shin Kong Life says ‘Shin Kong means bright light in mandarin. This light installation concretizes the connection between air pollution and quality of light, and promotes cycling as a healthy and sustainable way of living, a value dear to Shin Kong.’

Cynthia introduced the studio to Taiwan’s Minister of Environment to discuss the next phase of the project in Taiwan. Not only will the project repeat in other Cities but the installation in Taipei leaves a legacy behind as the cycling track was donated to a local children’s project at the close of the installation on 6 March.

VelO2 is a public engagement initiative that advocates clean, healthy cities and will be repeated in other locations, following the launch in Taipei.
