The ashtray is Malouin’s latest addition to his Connection series with OTHR. His inaugural object, the Connection Vessel , debuted at New York Design Week in 2016, followed weeks later by the Connection Bowl , in 3D printed steel, 3D printed porcelain, and a limited-edition run in 3D printed copper. Crafted with a precision only possible through modern technology, the Connection Ashtray appears just as at home on a living room table as it would in a museum.

Malouin values traditional craftsmanship; a value that OTHR, a designer-first company, shares. “When you have more time on your hands and you can actually slow down, that’s when things get really exciting,” says Malouin. “That’s when you can discover something new.” For OTHR, access to technology is a means to sustain traditional craftsmanship, rather than replace it. The year-old company shares Malouin’s vision of permanent and intentional objects; 21st century heirlooms in an increasingly disposable world.
