Appreciation towards Wutopia lab for providing the following description:

Wutopia Lab在北京柏树胡同为Stey hotel完成一个立面改造项目。这是个没有豪言壮语以及长篇累牍赘述历史的设计。原来在北京中心的胡同里矗立的这栋90年代建造的小宾馆，年久失修倒也淹没在环境里。建筑师决定对此做一个简单的修正。即减法减色，其目的是在形象色彩混杂丰富的胡同背景中突出Stey简洁明了干净的形象，但不张狂。

Wutopia Lab finished a façade renovation project for Stey Hotel in Baishu Hutong, Beijing. It’s a design without manifesto or heavily contextualized background. This small hotel from the 90s was overwhelmed in its surroundings thus the architect decided to do a simple correction by desaturating its façade in order to highlight it among the saturated hutong.

减法 | Subtraction

把平面轮廓线拉平，原来建筑的凸出凹进的阳台全部收在一根直线上。窗子开到足够大，保证足够的采光。尽可能选用一整块玻璃作为窗扇，剔除不必要的窗挺。外立面采用水泥挂板，选用最大尺寸减少拼缝。

The extruded balconies are subtracted to flatten the front façade; Windows of one single piece of glaze are bigger enough to ensure sunlight and unnecessary jambs are removed; The material of the façade is concrete cement panel with largest fitting dimension to reduce gaps.

减色 | Desaturation

建筑师就用了黑白两色。用灰白色控制主楼主色，没有用耀眼的本白是出于两点，一是胡同居民对本白的文化排斥，二是建筑师自己一直在测试不同色调和灰度的白色，因为他觉得这比本白更克制但不失表现力。窗套和首层则采用近于黑色的深灰色，建筑师希望在胡同街道层面消解建筑而突出室内丰富的活动。黑色和白色比例近于3：7，和江南民居的色彩比例接近。

Black and white is the major color used on the façade. Gray white is used on the main building that on the one hand residents in this neighborhood are against pure white color for cultural issue and on the other hand the architect thinks gray white is slightly restrained but still expressive enough. A dark gray color pretty close to black is used on window frames and the first floor because the architect hopes the darker color on lower level of the building is able to minimize the visibility of the building in a way and also highlight the rich interior space. The color ratio of black and white is near 3:7, which is close to the color ratio often used in Southern Yangtze River area.

小心机 | Little extra thought

建筑师在立面上做了折线型竖直线造型，这似乎是极简主义的废话，但减少立面的呆板，这个处理来自于上海art’deco竖直风格的变体，建筑师还用灯槽在夜景中强化了这种直立风格。克制地在极简主义上做一个小动作加以变化是一个上海人的习惯使然。

The architect did a vertical zigzag form for the façade, which reduce the rigidness of original form. This operation is ogirinated from the Shanghai vertical art’deco style and the architect further highlighted it by adding hidden recessive lighting.

Stey hotel的存在是因为胡同本身作为上句自然而然引出的下句，干净，简单，有秩序，话不多但姿态鲜明。一个代表新潮流的酒店就这样不声不响地出现在了市井十足的胡同里了。生活终究在改变。

As a response to the Huton’s rich environment, the existence of Stey Hotel naturally becomes a representative of new trends with cleanness, simplicity and order.
