“Phase,” color-shifting urethane paint on hand-carved Plexiglas, 36″ x 60″

September 9th through October 29th, 2011

Zg Gallery is pleased to present Steve Hough’s fourth solo show, “Solid State Liminal.” In the
seven new paintings, he creates figurative images of the movement of water through the use of
carved surface-distortions and reflective color-shifting auto-paint.

Hough describes his process: “I am interested in the history and traditions of Post-Minimal
reductive painting, and its content of aspiring toward the Sublime through formal considerations
of presence and absence. Using this antecedent as a point of departure, I am seeking to
reinvigorate the conventional flux of form and immateriality, by broadening the language of The
Monochrome to incorporate aspects of the Postmodern that occupy the liminal space between
authenticity and simulation; image and referent; uniqueness and ubiquity; reality and fantasy –
toward notions of a Contemporary Sublime.“

Ripples, varying in depth from thousands of an inch to one quarter of an inch, are hand-carved
into a polymer-panel substrate. The ripples are sanded smooth and coated with automotive paint.
After curing, the top-coat is wet-sanded and buffed to a glass-like finish.

Steve Hough was born and raised in Liverpool, England. He received his B.A. from the Slade
School of Fine Art, University College London and has also exhibited his work in New York, Los
Angeles, Miami & Basel, Switzerland. “Solid State Liminal,” is on exhibit from September 9th
through October 29th, 2011 at Zg Gallery, Chicago. Artist Reception is Friday, September 9th,
from 5:30-7:30 pm.
