Ramble is album with several sub albums. Here is one: Office in Hutong. Beijing, as the capital of China, has a long history, and currently is going through fast economical development. Hutong, as the traditional urban typology of Beijing city, is slowly disappearing. We try to find the offices in those Hutong, discover their ideas and life.

方家胡同46号院即原中国机床厂的厂址，占地面积9000平方米，现有建筑面积约13000平方米，是北京工业史上重要的“机床基地”。由于雍和宫、国子监、孔庙、钟鼓楼等离此地如此之近，让这处厂房无形中沾染了元、明、清三代古都的文化气韵。08年起方家胡同46号文化创意园区”在这里落成。有快捷酒店、小剧场、表演艺术团体、文化沙龙空间、建筑艺术、视觉设计、新媒体艺术、现代艺术中心等机构，各自具备不同的创新理念，呈现独特的艺术成果。

The 9000 m2 plot, once China Machine Tool Plant, played an important role in the industrial history of Beijing. The central location with The Lama Temple, Beijing Confucius Temple, Guozijian and Bell Drum Towers in the adjacent areas gives it a sense of cultural atmosphere, rather than purely industrial. In 2008, the establishment of the cultural and creative park revitalized the area. Lots of creative companies and studios in design, performing, visual art, modern art, etc, and design hotel, restaurants relocating here brought the neighborhood diversity and dynamic.

方家胡同白天看起来与其它充满老北京生活气息的胡同无异，但若您周末傍晚上这走走，就会发现胡同两侧的酒吧和餐厅聚集了很多老外聊天喝酒，灯光迷离人声喧哗，比露天烤串的大爷们聊天还热闹。46号院位于胡同中部。

During daytime, Fangjia Hutong is buzzing with social activity as any other hutong one could find in Beijing. In the weekend however, it would be dramatically transformed into a popular commercial street with bustling restaurants and bars and blurred lighting effects. The No.46 is located right in the middle of the Hutong.

OPEN的办公室位于方家胡同46号院的中庭北侧，是一栋被爬山虎覆盖的接地气的厂房。明亮的光线从坡屋顶的天窗照射进宽敞的室内。办公室里生机盎然的植物据说都是李虎老师骑自行车上班的路上一盆一盆地淘来的。

OPEN’s office is located at the north side of No. 46 courtyard. It is a warehouse covered by creepers. Bright sunshine coming through the skylight on the sloped roof lights up the whole spacious office. The plants that made the office like a garden were bought by Li Hu on his way to the office by bicycle.

哦，完全不知道居然院里有这么多事务所，真的应该多交流！
Huh, I have no idea there are so many design firms here. We should have communicated more often!

最近在做什么项目？What projects are you currently working at?

两个深圳的项目在施工，一个清华海洋楼一个坪山演艺中心。三个项目在深化设计，上海的油罐、武汉的超高层和南戴河的沙丘，还有其他一些竞赛与方案阶段的不同项目。
Two projects in Shenzhen are under construction: Tsinghua University’s Ocean Center and Pingshan Performing Arts Center; Three projects are in developed design phase: Shanghai West Bund Oiltank Art Park, Wuhan Sky City and Nandaihe Sand Dune; We have other competitions and different projects in different design phases too.

怎么发现方家胡同里的这个大院的。How did you find Fangjia Hutong 46?

搬到方家胡同46号是一次偶然的机会。
以前听说过方家胡同，回国后住的离这里很近，也有朋友向我们推荐过。
去年10月，工作室正在找新的办公地点，有一天看房的时候顺路溜达到了方家胡同46号，看到门口有物业办公室的电话，于是抱着试试看的心态打电话问了一下，凑巧有两间空房待租，物业工作人员打开E307房门的时候，我们一下子被窗外的大树震撼到了。当时正值下午，光线打到树上，树影映射到房间里，非常漂亮，而且室内空间层高比较高，感觉很舒适，几乎是瞬间便决定租下来，第二天就签了合同。

It is by chance that we moved to Fangjia Hutong No.46.
I have heard of Fangjia Hutong before, when I moved back to China I also lived nearby. In addition, some friends also recommended it to me.
Last October, our studio was looking for a new working place. One day, I walked by Fangjia Hutong No.46 and saw the phone number of the property management. I called the number just to give it a try. Luckily, there were two rooms left for rent. When the stuff of the property management opened the door of E307, we were overwhelmed by the lush tree outside the window. It was afternoon, light shined on the leaves, projecting the shades into the room. Such a stunning view. Also, the high ceiling is very comfortable for work. We almost immediately decided to rent the place, and signed the contract the next day.

大院里有多家建筑设计公司，请问你们平常交流多吗？如果有交流，聊些什么话题。Do you often communicate with your neighbor design companies? What would you talk about?

在我印象里，和46号院的几家事务所还没有过比较正式的专业交流。偶尔碰到邻居们会打个招呼，最多遇到的是和我们同在一层的成直，打照面儿时会随便聊聊。

In my memory, there is not yet much professional discussion with other architecture offices. I ran into some neighbors occasionally, and I would say hello. Most frequently, I encountered Cheng Zhi on the same floor, and we would chat a bit.

最近在做什么项目？What projects are you currently working at?

事务所最近的项目有办公空间改造、胡同更新以及幼儿园设计等等，其中有的刚开始概念设计，有的已进入到施工图设计配合阶段，也有几个正在施工。

Our recent projects include office renovation, Hutong restoration and kindergarten design. Some of them are at the stage of concept design, some are at the stage of making construction documents and others are already in construction.

最近思考的主要问题是？What is the formost issue of your recently projects?

1. 回国一年多，完成了几个项目，这期间会对之前的工作不断反思，同时也在观察自己的变化。
2. 考虑如何将以前的研究成果带入实践。
3. 工作室附近的胡同每天都在更新，隔不多久就会出现新的店铺或工地。对于城市而言，这种永不停息的更新像是人体细胞的新陈代谢，从代谢状态可以看出人的年龄、身体机能以及处在什么样的状态，城市的生长也是同样的道理。每天上班，穿过交错的胡同，通过胡同里的生活观察城市的状态，这一点很有意思。
4. 进行建筑实践的同时也在大学里带设计课，因此一直有在思考教育的方式和意义；另外，正在做的幼儿园设计项目，也让我对学校有了更多的认识。人从出生开始没多久便被送到学校接触集体生活，一般来讲，从幼儿园、小学、中学一直到大学，人有将近四分之一的光阴是在学校度过的，学校的环境会对现代人的成长产生了巨大的影响，因此，我希望可以在学校项目中创造出适合年轻人成长和学习的环境。

1. Being back in China for more than a year, I have completed a few projects. In the process, I constantly reflected upon my work and at the same time observing my changes.
2. I am also considering how to bring the research findings into practice.
3. The Hutong near our studio is being renewed every day. Once in a while, new shops or constructions will appear. For a city, this endless renewal is like the metabolism of human cell. From the metabolic status, one is able to tell the person’s age, somatic function and status. Same rules apply to a city’s growth. It is a very interesting experience to walk through the complex Hutong and discover the changing conditions of the city through those narrow streets every day.
4. While practicing architecture, I also teach architecture design course in college. Thus, I have always been thinking about ways and meanings of education. Also, the kindergarten project during the design phase gave me more insights on institutions. During very early years, a person would be sent to school and start to experience living collectively. In general, from kindergarten, elementary school to high school and college, one spend almost 1/4 of his life in school, so, the environment of school generates great impacts on the growths of people. Therefore, I hope to create an education environment suitable for the growing and learning of young people.

怎么发现方家胡同里的这个大院的。How did you find Fangjia Hutong 46?

我们是2009年3月初搬进这里的，是方家胡同46号大院最早入住的设计公司，在这里已经七年多了。2009年，我和合伙人Chris刚回国创立北京办公室。因为我们都不喜欢写字楼的约束感，当时就决定工作室要在胡同里。我们骑着自行车在各个胡同里串，到处寻找，看了好几家厂房改造的办公空间，但是发现很多地方被装修得不伦不类。我们就希望找一个简单、真实、不矫揉造作的地方。后来在网上搜到46号大院在招租。来看房的时候，物业带我们看了大院里好几个不同的空间，都不能使我们确定下来。后来临走时，物业说还有一个特破的地方在大院门外，问是否愿意再看看。当时屋子地上有一个大坑，房顶有一个大洞，旁边大树的树枝穿破屋顶横在屋子中间。但是我记得我和我合伙人进来以后看了一眼，就不约而同的说就要这个，物业当场愣住了。

As the first design firm in Fangjia Hutong No.46, we moved in by early March, 2009. At the moment, I just came back to China with my partner Chris and was looking for a work space for our newly established studio. We cycled in Hutongs to find a place contrast to the constrained office building, yet were disappointed by those awkward renovations. We were not quite satisfied with the available spaces showed by the property manager during our first visit of No.46, and he desperately showed us this dilapidated house before we left. For his surprise, we said yes immediately on the spot.

大院里有多家建筑设计公司，请问你们平常交流多吗？如果有交流，聊些什么话题。Do you often communicate with your neighbor design companies? What would you talk about?

大院里的租户更新很快，这七年里有过很多有意思的设计事务所曾在这里工作过。我们与立和空间的创始人贾立有很多合作、交流，两家事务所都是七年前在此扎根儿的，我们以前也住在附近胡同里，很多年里我们是生活与工作的双重邻居。由于我们工作室是向胡同开门的，位置较为特殊，我们与胡同里面的邻居交流特别多，都成了特别熟悉的街坊。

最近在做什么项目？What projects are you currently working at?

Tenants come and go fairly often. There has been many interesting design firms worked here once. We cooperated with Jia Li, the founder of Lispace, for some projects. Both of us started our business here 7 year ago, and lived nearby, so we were literally neighbors. Actually, since our office is facing the street, we have interactions and commutations with the local residences on a daily basis.
中关村e世界改造项目是我们在进行的项目中非常有挑战的一个项目。该项目占地三万多平米，作为中关村最有代表性的建筑地标，项目反映了整个中关村地区的经济转型。曾经的e世界大楼是最有名的电子产品大卖场，现在将定位成科技金融中心。我们希望通过改造设计，为城市还原出人与人之间能更直接交流的场所，就像我们窗外的这条胡同，每天都有各种事情在发生，嘈杂中充满人情味。

E-World renovation project is one of the most challenging on-going projects. The project covers over 30 thousand square meters area in the center of the Zhongguancun Area. E-World building is the landmark represent the economic restructuring of Zhongguancun. The once renowned electronics marketplace is repositioning itself as the future Technology Financial Center. We aim to recreate the space for dynamic urban live with more directive interactions between people, just as if the hutong outside our office, noisy yet full of life.

2009年公司刚成立的时候，我提出了“弥漫空间（Suffused Space）”的设计理念，过去的7年里，我们大大小小做了近百个项目，并对此进行了很多层次及不同方向的实践探索。5月4日，我们举行了一个特别有意义的七周年庆祝活动，邀请了业内富有想法、富有情怀的大咖们，一起交流并讨论了我们的探索和实践。大家给予了有意义的反馈，让我有了更多的思考。我们如何能走出西方思考与评论的体系？我们是否能建立讨论东方思想的语境？讨论东方文化不应该是简单的民族主义行为，而是要用平和的心态承认差异，站在全球地域的范围，在历史的维度，让人类的多样化产生更大的意义与价值。

I proposed the concept of “Suffused Space” in 2009 and continued developing it in the last 7 years, through practice over some 100 projects. In 4th of May, we gathered with many creative friends to celebrate our 7-year anniversary. We shared our thoughts and practices with them and those comments made me think further. Will we be able to have an evaluation system that is not based on western culture? Will we be able to establish a context for the discussion of eastern culture? Discussing eastern culture shall not be a simple nationalism behavior. Only if we could see the differences with open minds, we could constructively let diverse culture beneficial for further global evolution.

设计理念 Design Philosophy

随着媒体技术发展的日新月异，我们的生活有了巨大的变化。我们可以随时随地与世界上任何角落的人沟通。跨空间交流的实现，使我们了解到不同社会的不同文化。而在现实世界中，我们也能在同一个大城市中感受到不同的文化。单一文化已不合时，对不同文化的相互理解，这才是在现今社会最重要的能力。
我坚信设计要反映出现代人的生活状况与生存环境，所以我所设计的作品都以尊重他人的文化为宗旨。然而在现在这个多元文化交汇的社会，将古典文化直接反映在设计作品上已远远不够。无论是城市规划，建筑设计还是室内设计，我都将追求以最新最现代的技术手法，阐释不同文化的独特特征。

The development of media technology largely influences in changing our human activities. We can communicate with others on the other side of the globe in an instant. It realizes global library or virtual traveling on the internet, enabling us to understand different culture and their society from any places in the world. As well, in the real world, we can easily experience different culture in the metropolitan cities. The persistence of the single culture is not accepted on this situation. Mutual understanding is one of most important abilities these days. I believe that design should be reflected from present human activities and enclosed environment. I appreciate their original culture on the process of design. However, in such a multi-cultural society, the design reflected directly from classic culture is not appropriate. I would like to pursue the contemporary interpretation of their culture by challenging to apply new technology and method through the urban, architectural and interior design project.

怎么发现方家胡同里的这个大院的。How did you find Fangjia Hutong 46?

相比商业圈或写字楼现代化快节奏的工作环境，我们一直希望能在一个更为轻松融洽的场所里工作。而胡同是传统却又包容的，她朴素敏锐，底蕴深长，在这里似乎能让人感受到光影时间的流动，正符合我们对工作地点的选择。经过中国朋友的介绍，我们决定将事务所搬进胡同里的方家46号院，希望能更好地融入传统文化，提升兼容并蓄的设计理念。

We prefer a more relax working space rather than the modern, fast pace working environment of office buildings. The traditional Hutong is inclusive, simply and acute. The ever-changing light condition reveals the fluidity of time, which perfectly matchs our expectation. As our Chinese friend’s suggestion, we moved into Fangjia Hutong 46, to blend in with the traditional culture and to enhance our inclusive design.

可能大家都比较忙吧，平常基本上也没什么太多的交流。

I would love to communicate with them but perhaps we are all too busy.

最近在做什么项目？What projects are you currently working at?

有胡同里的老房改造项目，比如前不久刚结束的五道营HE餐厅的设计，正在进行的抄手胡同私宅的改造。也有坐落在时尚购物商圈的商业店面的整体设计，像位于成都太古里的日式料理店的设计项目。风格跨度比较大，改造项目我们会更多地保留原建筑的“气质”，适当地突出原建筑的构造亮点和建筑元素，重点做内部空间的规划和功能提升；而商业空间的项目，我们会更多地考虑利用现代元素和设计手段去打破传统商业空间的模式，创造令人耳目一新的商业空间。

北京是个多元包容的城市，而城市本身又有着深厚的历史底蕴。在这里，由地点，场所，建筑结构而形成的建筑物的‘场’，都有其独有的特征和历史背景。不同项目的客户，他们对空间功能的需求更加的开放、个性，与时俱进。当‘人’与‘建筑’两者处于同一时空中，他们会产生对话，也必然会产生碰撞。这样的对话和碰撞也是我们的兴趣所在。作为设计师，当我们参与到这个对话的过程时，既要有保留建筑物独特魅力的尺度把握，又能使作为环境主导的人类活动在空间中得以完美契合。尊重建筑本身，同时赋予她更加完整的功能性和存在意义——作为让不断变化的人类活动与历史沉淀的文化产生互动的空间载体。创造多元化的融汇又不失独特特征的空间也是odd事务所一直主张的设计理念。

Beijing is diverse and inclusive city with a profound history. The location, space and architectural structure creat a unique characteristic and historical backgournd for each building. While the requirements of the clients are more open, personal and advanced. The communication and collision of people and architecture interest us. As architects who involve the whole process, we would have to balance the preservation with the transformation, to reinvest a more comprehensive functionality, to create a space where human activity interact with the history while respecting the building itself.

介绍 Introduction

MAT Office，由唐康硕和张淼于2013年创立于荷兰鹿特丹，是基于鹿特丹和北京的一个设计和研究公司。MAT Office主要致力于观察和思考当下城市化进程中不断涌现的问题, 并以此为基础引发对建筑设计领域可能性的探讨。

从2014年底开始，MAT Office 开展了对未来办公空间的研究课题 Office 3.0，并积极与学校、研究机构、设计师、运营方等合作，通过大量调研、案例分析、研讨分享等方式，对办公空间的历史、类型、模型和空间形态进行了系统性的研究。 2014年，唐康硕和张淼参与到北京老旧小区的社区更新研究，并展开相关设计实践。2016年初，MAT Office启动了对后城市化时代的社区设计课题的专项研究，并正在通过教学工作坊、研究型设计的形式推进。

通过一系列设计项目和研究作品，MAT Office 在城市设计、城市与社会和空间转型策略以及建筑设计、空间设计等多种角度给出提议。MAT Office 也积极参与展览、教学和文化活动的组织与设计。事务所成员曾经参与第五届深港双城双年展策展团队，也参与了第十五届威尼斯建筑双年展的平行展展览设计工作；唐康硕和张淼也以设计课教师的身份参与了中国科学院大学、哈尔滨工业大学和清华大学的短期教学工作。

Founded by Kangshuo Tang and Miao Zhang, MAT Office is a research and design studio based in Rotterdam and Beijing. It is an office dedicating to the observation and speculation of emerging issues within the contemporary urbanization process while strategically seeking architectural possibilities based upon these principles.

Beginning from the end of 2014, MAT Office initiated the research project, Office 3.0, aiming to discuss the future of office space. Office 3.0 is a systematic study on the history, typology, model and spatial organization of office spaces. With the collaborations from schools, research institutions, designers and clients, this multilateral study is comprehensive and fully supported by academic researches, case studies and professional discussions. Meanwhile, Kangshuo Tang and Miao Zhang also collaborated in a social renovation research project on communities issues in Beijing. From 2016, MAT Office initiated another sociocultural research study followed by workshops and research-based designs discussing community design in the context of post-urbanization era.

Through research and design projects, MAT Office develops a series of concepts about urban studies, strategic social and spatial transformations as well as architectural designs. MAT Office is also an active organizer and member in the field of exhibition, education and sociocultural activities. Members of the office have participated in the organizing committee of the 2013 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (Shenzhen, Hong Kong) and the Eventicollaterali of the 2016 Mostra di Architettura di Venezia. Kangshuo Tang and Miao Zhang are also visiting studio professors of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Harbin Institute of Technology and Tsinghua University.

怎么发现方家胡同里的这个大院的。How did you find Fangjia Hutong 46?

我们从06年开始就一直在北新桥和东四这片儿住，奥运之前，方家胡同46号改造完成，那时候这儿有两个小剧场，周末的时候经常约着朋友过来看戏；还有个猜火车，也总是在放一些独立电影，当时这儿其实是东城的一个文艺青年聚集地。

Since 2006, we have been lived in Beixinqiao and Dongsi which are very close to this area. After the renovation of the Fangjia Hongtong 46th , we found this place really enjoyable with excellent shows, and originally there were two small theaters here, as well as the outdoor movie restaurant Caihuoche. It is truly a hub for young artists and designers at that time.

大院里有多家建筑设计公司，请问你们平常交流多吗？如果有交流，聊些什么话题。Do you often communicate with your neighbor design companies? What would you talk about?

说实话平时见到的还是少，可能建筑师们都太忙了吧。倒是经常会在其他场合，论坛啊、展览什么的会见到。建筑师除了一起吐槽一下低迷的行业情况和不靠谱的甲方之外，大多数时候还是挺愿意分享自己的项目和最近的一些新鲜想法的。

Well, it is not that easy to meet each other here in the neighborhood. I guess that’s probably because architects are busy all the time. However, there were occasions like forums and exhibitions where we bumped into each other. Normally the conversations started on complaints about the shrinking architectural industry and unhappy cooperation with inconsiderate clients, but for the most of the time we enjoyed sharing our new projects and thoughts.

我们最近在做的都是改造类项目，有普通办公空间类的，也有厂房改造成办公和展示的，还有给社区改造的居民活动空间；我们在东海的一个小岛上改造了一个码头游客中心，其实很小的一个房子，马上要动工了，在杭州郊区的山上把一组民居改造成民宿酒店聚落，也正在出施工图。同时，研究工作也在进行，4月初我们刚刚结束了一个关于社区设计的开放设计课，并且完成了第一阶段的研究报告；我们最近其实很大的精力在做我们的研究报告《OFFICE 3.0》的出版编纂工作，研究做了一年半，书有600页厚，目前刚刚众筹结束，估计一个月之内就能印刷完毕。

We are focusing on several renovation projects now, such as office space in high-rise building or warehouse, and also renovation on community public spaces. We just finished designing a tourist center on an island in the China East Sea, and it is now under construction. There is another renovation project in the suburb area in Hangzhou where we converted traditional residences into a guesthouse settlement.
Meanwhile, there are also progresses on research as well. We concluded an open design workshop early this year, and finished the first phase report on community design. On the other hand, we have been put in a lot of efforts in editing and publishing our research, the Office 3.0. The research was one year and a half long and the production is going to be over 600 pages.

最近慢慢意识到，建筑和城市，其实就是关于人和他工作、生活的空间和环境的学科，这是非常朴实的。我们自己在做工作空间、社区生活空间、以及休闲空间的项目的时候，如何找到设计与人的关系的链接点。

We gradually realize that the subject of architecture and city is really about people and the living /working environment around. We believe this seemingly basic thought is the essence of the subject. We are also reflecting on the essence of the relationship between people and design while we are working on projects like working spaces, community public spaces and public recreational spaces.

怎么发现方家胡同里的这个大院的？How did you find Fangjia Hutong 46?

当初选办公场所时，我们就希望找到一个安静又有设计氛围的地方落脚，既可以专心的做设计又不失文化趣味。在寻找的过程中偶然通过网络发现了方家胡同46号院，实地考察发现正好符合我们的预期，很快就决定待在这里了。

Before looking for the place to settle our office, we actually expected to find a quiet place with rich design atmosphere, where we can indulge in design without being disturbed, at the same time enjoy the pleasant creative “air”. When we encountered Fangjia Hutong 46 Yard on internet, we immediately decided to have a look at it, and it turned out to be the right place we were looking for.

大院里有好几家建筑设计公司，请问你们平时交流多吗？如果有交流，聊些什么话题？Do you often communicate with your neighbor design companies? What would you talk about?

平时和其中几家有交流，交流最多的是我们的邻居MAT。
一般会聊聊各自最近做的有趣项目，分享一下有关设计的工作感受，有时也会讨论一下市场形势。每次加班回家时还能看一眼谁是最后的“守楼人”。

Yes, we talk to some of the architecture design studios here, among which MAT, our close neighbor, is the one we communicate with most.
Usually we like sharing the interesting projects we are doing and how we think of the certain design ect, sometimes we discuss the market as well. And we joke that ToThree and MAT are the keepers of our building, as we often work late till midnight.

最近在做什么项目？What projects are you currently working at?

有几个老街改造项目，如：南京万科安品园舍、福州融信双杭城、福州万科烟台山等，当然还有现代住区环境导示系统与公共艺术的设计，比如北京万科翡翠公园、厦门中航当代半岛等

There are several reconstruction projects we are carrying on, such as: Nanjing Vanke An Pin Yuan She, Fouzhou Rongxin Shuang Hang Cities and Fuzhou Vanke Old US Consulate project; and of course the signage system and public art design for modern residential compounds, for instance: Beijing Vanke Emerald Community and Xiamen AVIC Peninsula etc.

因为最近同时有几个老街改造相关的环境导视系统项目，我们在思考老街区改造中各项目间的共性与差异，老街项目中环境信息应以何种方式呈现，如何让场地精神通过导示及公共艺术的方式扎找到支点，建立令人印象深刻的独特印象。

Recently, there are several projects on reconstruction of historical street areas are ongoing, we are trying to figure out the similarities and differences among them, how to present the new environmental information in the old buildings and establish the spirits of the historical architectures from an impressive and unique perception through signage and public art design.

怎么发现方家胡同里的这个大院的。How did you find Fangjia Hutong 46?

6，7年前有个朋友在OPEN工作，那会儿他负责OPEN在方家胡同一个正在施工的项目。才知道Studio X那会儿是哥伦比亚大学北京中心。那两年猜火车经常有独立放映。所以有感兴趣的片子也就会过来看看。一年前我们之前的办公室合同到期，并且有些不确定因素导致我们必须换房。那会儿正好有个朋友在46号院办公，推荐我们过来看看。我们因此找到了现在的办公室。

We first came to hear about Fangjia Hutong through a friend who, working for OPEN at the time, introduced us to Studio X and Yard No. 46. We began to visit the courtyard regularly, often attending the independent film screenings at the Trainspotting Cafe. Last year, in May 2015, the contract of our previous office expired and it became necessary to find somewhere new. It just so happened that during this time, another friend notified us of spaces to let in Yard No. 46, so we moved in.

大院里有多家建筑设计公司，请问你们平常交流多吗？如果有交流，聊些什么话题。Do you often communicate with your neighbor design companies? What would you talk about?

我们比较熟悉和经常有联系的是MAT office 的唐康硕和张淼。和C+ Architects的程艳春博士。但是因为大家都比较忙，所以经常是下楼抽烟或者上厕所的时候遇见聊两句。也有时候正好赶上就一起出门吃个午饭。说到聊的话题，就特别杂。包括大家最近在做的事情，或者对某个具体事件的评论和看法。

The other designers we in contact with in Yard No. 46 are Tang Kangshuo and Zhang Miao of MAT Office, and Cheng Yanchun of C+ Architects. Everyone works hard so we don’t have time to meet frequently, other than a friendly chat when we see each other in the courtyard or corridors. That said, we do find time to share lunch once in a while, where we might discuss our current projects or debate opinions on various topics and events we share an interest in.

最近在做什么项目？What projects are you currently working at?

有三个实际项目在持续进展或者暂停的过程中，都是尺度不大的改造项目。一个项目是，要在一个工业桶仓围绕的场地内，植入一个小朋友学习和玩耍的空间。这个项目处于非常前期的阶段，还在和甲方讨论一些策略性的问题。另一个项目是在一个综合咖啡，书店，放映和讲座功能的室内改造。这个项目已经进入工人进场前的最后准备。但是由于甲方项目运作上的计划变更，暂时处于停滞状态。第三个项目是一个好朋友委托的在北京内城的一个小院子的居室和院落改造。这个项目正在构造研究和施工图设计阶段。

一个自发性研究项目，无常几种。是一个持续的开放城市研究项目。关注与北京这座城市中所孕育的和时间性有关的话题。主要方法是田野调查，文本搜索和阅读，影像记录。

We are currently running three design projects, all renovations at a small scale:
The first project is a mixed-use classroom and playground for children, located on a disused warehouse site. We are still in the early stages of background research, trying to determine a strategy in conversation with our clients.

The second project is an interior renovation. The scheme will have multiple potential uses, including cafe and bookshop as well as hosting small screenings and lectures. Contractors were due to begin on site last month, but have been put on hold whilst the client reorganises their time schedule. We are looking forward to restarting the project.

Our third project is a Siheyuan renovation, in the centre of Beijing, the residence for a family of three. The scheme is now at construction and detail drawing stage.

The office is also carrying out research on ‘Types of Transformation in the City’, a project focused on the time, temporality and permanences of Beijing. This ongoing investigation includes exploratory fieldwork and the study of various documents, alongside the recording of both still and moving images.

最近更多的在讨论一个关于延续性的问题。所谓延续性包含很多层面，空间的延续，时间的延续，感知的延续，身体动作的延续等等。一方面最近对Aldo Rossi的反复阅读，受其影响。上个月正好有朋友邀请参加讲座，多聊两句城市中的时间性。便结合手头在做的无常几种这个小研究项目，一起来思考这个时间性的问题。但时间性的展开就不可避免的把空间上的延续性，人们感知上或动作上的延续性一起带入了考虑的范畴。在我们四合院改造的那个项目中，也有一些关于延续性的有益尝试，并且获得大家还都比较满意的结果。所以更激发了想要深入开拓这个话题的欲望。

Recently we have been considering the theme of ‘Continuity’ and how it may be related terms of time and space, feeling and movement. For this, our main reference and inspiration has been the work of Aldo Rossi.In May 2016 we gave a lecture on our research of ‘Types of Transformation in the City’, consolidating the historical analysis with our thoughts on continuity in time. However, in the process of preparation, we found we couldn’t ignore the importance of continuity in space, and even in movement and feeling.These ideas of continuity have also filtered through to our practise, most notably in our Siheyuan proposal. The positive response of our client has been very encouraging, and drives us to further tighten the relationship between our design and research.

怎么发现方家胡同里的这个大院的。How did you find Fangjia Hutong 46?

最直接的理由就是班墨国际西藏的其中一个合伙人也是基本联合工作室的合伙人，同时基本联合工作室也坚持着联合办公的理念以开放的心态包容同样年轻的团队分享办公室。
The most direct reason is that one of the partners in BM_TIBET is also a partner of Office Essential Union. Meanwhile, Office Essential Union uphold the idea of joint official business as well as sharing offices with young teams in an open heart.

大院里有多家建筑设计公司，请问你们平常交流多吗？如果有交流，聊些什么话题。Do you often communicate with your neighbor design companies? What would you talk about?

班墨国际西藏是今年年初才成立，所以严格来讲大院里目前是9家建筑设计公司。交流最多的当然是我们的室友基本联合工作室。因为项目比较饱满，工作时间基本上都是零交流的状态。
BM_TIBET was established early this year, so technically speaking there have 9 architectural design companies in the compound by now. Most communications are happening under this roof with our roommate Office Essential Union. For the projects are time-taking , there is not much time for extra chatting during work .

最近在做什么项目？What projects are you currently working at?

我们的业务范围主要在西藏地区，目前正在同步进行几个实际工程设计工作。一个是在那曲地区的保障性居住区，这是一个政府主导由开发商建设的住房项目。另一个项目是在昌都地区的银行网点。与此同时，我们还在进行一些规模很小的建筑方案研究与实践。
Our business scope mainly in the Tibet regions, so far, we have designing parts of two practical engineering projects that are proceeding. One is an affordable residential area in Nagqu, which is a government led by the developers of the housing construction project. Another project is in Qamdo, which is a county branch of the Bank. At the same time, we are still in some of the very small size of the construction program research and practice.

最近主要思考的内容主要是围绕现阶段的工程项目遇到的阻力或是发生的问题以及它们背后的原因。这其中最明显的是整个西藏地区建筑行业以及工程项目还停留在一个较为低端的起步阶段，对于项目的控制力与对设计的理解力还和内地市场有很大的差距。当然这是一个我们必须接受的客观事实。因此，对于班墨国际西藏这一家以北京设计师为主要团队的设计公司如何更为有效的与西藏市场落地才是我们需要认真思考的。

其实直到现在，我们还在寻找一个能够解决问题最根本的方法对策。但是，通过我们的尝试，大概可以认识到身为设计的角色需要投入更多的工作与思考，进入到甲方的角色中，替他去考虑更多项目管理的问题。这样才能在不太成熟的市场环境下，高效、高完成度的落实每一个项目。
What we thinking recently is mainly about the current stage of the project encountered resistance or problems and the reasons behind them. The most obvious is the construction industry and engineering projects in Tibet area are still in the initial stage of a relatively low level. For the project control and design understanding, a great gap is still lying between the Tibet and mainland market . Of course, this is an objective fact that we have to accept. Therefore, as a design company consist of designers from Beijing, it should be considered how to be more effectively in connecting and serving better in Tibet market.
In fact, until now, we are still seeking for a fundamental way to solve the problem. However, through our attempts, we could probably realized that more work and thinking need to be invested, Into the role of Party A, for him to consider more project management issues. Only in this case, could we accomplish each project in high efficiency and high degree of completion under the circumstance of less mature market.
