HASSELL is a leading international design practice with studios in Australia, China, South East Asia and the United Kingdom.

We judge the success of the buildings and places we design by the way people use and enjoy them – the clients who commission them, the people who inhabit them. Understanding what our clients do and what they are trying to achieve is critical to the design process. Over 75 years, HASSELL has developed a deep understanding of our clients and the sectors they work in. For example, we have delivered over a million square metres of workplace design for more than 1,000 clients. Our people know how design can change or support organisational culture, productivity, efficiency and employee satisfaction.

In the health sector our project experience ranges from specialist and acute facilities through to large-scale teaching hospitals. Our education and science sector clients comprise some of Australia’s foremost institutions from leading research universities and highly technical laboratories to primary and secondary schools and play spaces for pre-school children. In transportation, our designers’ extensive international experience on aviation, road and rail projects makes them experts in designing to deliver superlative passenger experiences.

As the world becomes increasingly urbanised, we design city shaping projects that create human scale precincts and places that people enjoy living and working in.

Our clients come to us with specific goals in mind: meeting business targets, improving efficiency, expanding markets or creating a new brand. HASSELL finds effective design solutions to help our clients reach their goals.

HASSELL 悉尼事务所 HASSELL STUDIO SYDNEY

Breathing new life into disused inner-urban industrial sites is something of a passion at HASSELL, and our Sydney studio at Millers Point is no exception. The heritage listed, former wool store on pier 8/9 was once at the heart of a vibrant trading port. The precinct has since been transformed into a residential, entertainment and creative hub, incorporating a diverse mix of established and up-and-coming firms and industries.

The 2,000 sqm HASSELL workplace occupies three floors of the pier. It is an open and collaborative space that both showcases and enhances the creativity of the integrated design team it houses. The interior fitout works with the character of the original building, with a careful material selection that complements rather than competes with the robust, industrial nature of the site.

Original wood panels from the wool store remain in place to create subtle subdivisions throughout the space. The modern structural steel work, which supports the inserted mezzanine space, was painted white to put the fabric of the original building on show.

Within the studio there are a range of spaces that encourage formal and informal teamwork – exemplified by the large ‘grandstand’ that greets people on arrival. Flexible workstations allow for close collaboration between colleagues and can be easily reconfigured to accommodate changing project requirements.

The interior palette is deliberately restrained, with a focus on elements that have soft, natural finishes that complement rather than compete with the robust materials of the original building. The neutral colour palate also creates a ‘blank-canvas’ that puts the design processes and the way we work on show.

The hero of this project is the heritage pier. We are very proud to be part of its history, helping to reinvent its purpose and see it continue to be a vibrant and valuable contributor in the next phase of Sydney’s growth.

Boasting spectacular views over Victoria Harbour, the HASSELL Hong Kong studio is located in North Point, a cluster point for local and international creative practices. Like all our other studios around the world, it’s bespoke and tailored to meet the needs of our team.

Our open plan studio stretches in a horseshoe shape around the entire floor, designed with a number of workplace settings for different modes of working and collaboration. The long, thin front area, known as the Pencil Gallery, features flexible meeting, collaboration and event spaces, enabling our designers to work freely in a way that each different project requires. It’s a collaborative space where ideas are born, sketched and pinned up for discussion.

The integrated design teams sit in close proximity to one another around the studio and near the pin up walls – a key tool they use throughout the design process. The pin up walls run continuously around the inside perimeter of the studio – it’s the most valuable real estate in the studio. These walls feature active, ever changing content of the live projects and competitions that we’re involved in around the world and help the teams in the collaborative design review process and open discussion.

Team benches have touchdown spaces at the end, for quick catch-up, materials review and design discussion. All our designers are trained to use the model room – here they can quickly test ideas in foam models for scale, proportion and context. The meeting rooms in the studio vary in scale from boardroom, settings from 4-6, down to single person quiet rooms. As a global practice with projects worked on cross-regionally, we work inter-studio. A lot of our teams straddle various regions and time zone, so designing all our studios with the right technology and spaces to enable design sessions in real time is incredibly important.

Our Hong Kong studio is flooded by natural light all day long, with polished concrete floors and a natural colour palette that frames the ever changing outside scenery and colours. The common thread between all the HASSELL studios is the approach to design and the spaces enable us to test ideas, explore possibilities and be curious, helping us to design the best outcomes for our clients.

Sydney’s historic Finger Wharf was the perfect spot for Ovolo’s next Australian hotel. Given the iconic location, the energetic lifestyle brand needed to completely transform the site’s existing facilities to appeal to a new generation of guests while reinvigorating the wharf and bringing the brand to life.

Joint venture partners HASSELL + Populous have delivered the architectural design for Sydney’s new integrated convention, exhibition and entertainment precinct at Darling Harbour as design consultants to the Darling Harbour Live consortium (comprising Lend Lease, Capella Capital, AEG Ogden and Spotless). The remaking of Darling Harbour was a rare opportunity to design a significant new quarter within the central city.

The Great Room Offices are designed to change the way people feel about going to work. More like a hotel than the usual flexible workplace, The Great Room is proof that co-working has reached a new level of maturity – differentiating itself from hubs of start-ups and freelancers to become a critical component of corporate life.
