粮道街 | Liangdao Street

幽幽粮道街一千四百米，是武汉著名的美食街，有496个商铺，上百个流动摊贩。每天随着夜幕降临，这里的生活剧场却徐徐开幕，流动摊贩出现在各个街角，固定门面则将经营范围扩展至人行道上。商贩们表演的道具是推车，各种型号与功能，精致或粗糙，但不变的是移动灵活，人车合一。他们警惕观察，精心布置，抢占有利地形，在城管划定的边界线上伺机的挪进挪出，斗智斗勇；他们要把握人流，躲避监管，懂得共享，平衡利益，彼此间既有竞争，也要合作。如此精彩的即兴表演，堪比兰布拉大街上的街头艺人们。

The deep and serene Liangdao Street is 1.4 kilometers long, with 496 shops and hundreds of mobile street vendors. Every day, the curtain of the living theatre of this street lifts under the cover of night. One could witness these throngs of peddlers suddenly appear from around the corner and shops with their goods displayed onto sidewalks out front. These vendors’ tool is their cart, and no matter what specification or function it has, whether it’s delicate or rough, the flexibility of movement never changes. Armed with these tools, vendors in this street compete and also collaborate with each other through all sorts of strategy and tactics. Such brilliant improvisations are comparable to the performance of the buskers on the La Rambla Street.

边界 | Boundary

业主是一家做成都串串的小餐馆，希望装点门前的地块，包括增设文化墙和灯箱来吸引关注。然而，这片不大的区域却张力十足，没有明确的边界，它同时属于人行道、临时停车位、隔壁店铺的后门和小区的消防通道。邻居、行人、城管、顾客、各类车辆不断的发生遭遇战，并在协商、争辩、妥协、斗狠和偷鸡中重塑着边界。可占道经营的区域可能是90平米、43平米，或者完全没有，还要随时避让货物和车辆的进出。为了在各种状况中从容不迫，这家餐馆需要像那些流动摊贩学习。

The client is a small hotpot restaurant which hopes to decorate its entrance area, including the addition of a cultural wall and light box to catch attention. However, this tiny space has no definite boundary, as it acts as the sidewalk, temporary parking, back door of the neighbor and fire lane of the community all at the same time. The neighbors, urban inspectors, customers and all kinds of vehicles keep remodeling the boundary by means of negotiation, argument, concession, threat or bluff. As a result, the area which can be occupied to do business could be 90 square meters, 43 square meters or none. In addition, they have to make way for vehicles and cargo at any moment. In order to handle these sorts of situations, this restaurant should take a lesson from the street vendors.

灯车 | Light-cart

面对这种非正规的命题，我们可以尝试挑战词典语法，去发明新的词汇，比如，灯箱加上小推车就成了灯车。我们按照普通商用灯箱的做法，用5公分规格的角铁焊接成框架，一共做了五个。一个在顶部做招牌，两个固定在两侧做文化墙，还有两个装上万向轮、把手、插销、活叶和轨道，变成可活动的“灯车”。它们组合起来可以演化出六种形态，以应对不同的状况。

In the face of such an informal topic, we take the opportunity to challenge the rules of grammar to devise new words, for instance, combining light box and cart to create light-cart. According to the manufacturing process of the standard commercial light box, we fabricate five boxes which are made from angle irons. One of them is at the top to be the billboard, two of them are fastened in front of the exterior wall, and the last two boxes are loaded with wheels, handles, bolts and tracks. These boxes have six variations to deal with different situations.

塑料筐 | Plastic basket

直接采用其它工业制品来做外围护已经十分常见，比如集装箱、啤酒箱、轮胎、椅子… 相比于普通建筑材料，这种策略会让建筑立面带有暧昧的隐喻性或者是新奇的的错位感。我们希望在角铁框架中填充一些类似的东西。对串串店有明确指向性的工业制品有很多：铜锅、竹签，甚至煤气坛子，但都太过具象也不容易砌筑，所以选择把分辨率调低，去捕捉一种抽象的市井气质。最终选定的材料是塑料蔬果筐和啤酒箱，它们通俗的影射了那一类最日常的餐饮文化，并且天然的具有可砌筑性，这可以模糊与常规建筑材料间的界限。

Nowadays, we are accustomed to using some kinds of industrial products to act as upkeep to the building envelope, such as containers, beer cases, tires or chairs… such a strategy would let the facade possess a sense of metaphor and novelty. We plan to fill our boxes with some similar stuff to catch the atmosphere of the marketplace culture. Ultimately, the plastic vegetable basket and beer case are selected as they precisely allude to our everyday dining culture and can be easily manipulated.

蔬果筐和啤酒箱依照各自的特点，被放进了不同的角铁框架内。正面部分作为主要的昭示面，采用啤酒箱填充，因为它洞口比较大，便于塞入灯泡和花盆来装点。其它部分采用密网的蔬果筐，配合装在背面的射灯，来制造斑驳的光影效果。

Vegetable baskets and beer cases are filled in the five angle iron boxes according to their features: all the beer cases are placed in the front part as it could be easily decorated with bulbs and flowerpots; on the other hand, the vegetable baskets are placed in side elevation to create fractured light and shadow.

城管 | urban inspector

开工第二天城管就来了，一连几波人，仔细审查我们的设计图纸。在书斋中做研究，总以为非正规性的天敌是自上而下的规训力量，比如城管，可是他们事实上成了保护我们的人。一周的施工期内，投诉从未间断，城管疲于应付，但投诉并非来自于共同使用这块地的邻居，他们一直积极参与方案的讨论，并乐见其成。化身为监管者的却是街上其它的老居民，即使是住在很远的地方，但突然发现“公家的”地要被侵占，他们感到非常不安。重压之下，工人冒雨赶工。当两扇“灯箱”一齐展开，店长不由得捂嘴笑道：难怪城管要管我们，真的是，变化太大了！

During the period of construction, urban inspectors come over to review our design paper many times, as they keep receiving complaints from neighbors. Although the renovation project does not directly conflict with these residents’ interest, these people are just anxious about impending occupation of the public space. Under great pressure, our workers do their job despite the rain. When the two light-carts were launched at the same time, our client laughed: “No wonder the urban inspector look nervous, the change is so big!”
