Appreciation towards dot Architects for providing the following description:

“胡玩”是度态建筑为2018年北京国际设计周白塔寺社区设计的胡同儿童活动中心。这个活动中心位于白塔寺宫门口西岔11-13号，在设计周期间开放，并举办了多场住户参与的社区活动。

“Hu-play” is a Hutong children play center designed by dot Architects for the 2018 Beijing Design Week (BDW). Located in Baitasi hutong area, it was opened during the BDW and hosted many community events for local residents.

度态建筑连续数年参加了北京国际设计周的旧城区展览活动。2017年我们在白塔寺的展场，是一个修复改造的四合院——白塔寺未来之家。在展览期间，每天都有好几个胡同里的小朋友一开门就冲进来，然后在里面一玩就是几个小时。这些小孩并不太关心展览和设计的内容，他们只是对胡同里突然出现的这个空间感兴趣：干净，整洁，宽敞，对外开放，可以随便追跑打闹。他们把展览空间当作了游戏场。

这件事让我们突然明白：胡同也需要儿童的活动空间。大部分城市人口居住在封闭小区中，他们的孩子在社区花园玩耍，在购物中心的布景化儿童活动中心里娱乐。而胡同作为城市的陈旧板块，发展趋于停滞，人口也在不断疏解中。胡同居民在胡同的街巷空间中解决所有的公共活动，似乎也很少去外部的购物中心娱乐。当胡同内部出现优质的公共空间时，儿童会第一时间发现并占领，当作他们的娱乐空间。

Our hutong renovation project Baitasi House of the Future (published on Gooood) was open to the public in the last year Beijing Design Week. During the exhibition, we were surprised by the genuine fondness showed by the hutong kids.

Most people in Beijing live in new built residential compound. Their children usually play in the community gardens or in the well-designed playrooms in shopping malls. In hutong area, the street itself becomes the only social space. But due to parked cars and busy traffic, it is not a safe place for children to play.

2018年白塔寺设计周的主题是“暖城行动”，我们开始思考：什么是胡同居民真正需要的？基于去年对于胡同儿童活动的观察，度态建筑决定为胡同儿童设计一个娱乐活动空间。

Under the theme “Neighbourhood Warming Initiatives” of 2018 Beijing Design Week Baitasi, we kept on thinking about what is really needed by hutong neighbourhood. Based on our observations of hutong life, we decided to make a play center for the hutong kids.

“胡玩”由两间相邻的闲置门面房组成。这两间房在胡同街角，东西通透，采光较好。第一间房是社区客厅和阅读等候空间；第二间房是儿童专用，布置成一个海洋球池。球池房间临街的窗洞做了一个凸出的白房子，这个白房子架在窗台上，内部有一个滑梯伸到海洋球池里。

Hu-play consists of two rooms. One room is served as a waiting area and a small library for kids. The other room is transformed into a ball pit. One of the windows is replaced by a wooden box which is opened up to the street and leads to a slide down into the ball pit.

胡同儿童活动中心采用低成本的快速建造方式来完成改造。设计师通过墙面涂料的颜色区分了两个空间，并采用装配式的方法现场搭建了窗台上的滑梯白房子。

The play centre is fast built and low cost. Rooms with different functions are separated with paint colours. All the insertion elements are CNC cut and installed in one day.

在设计周期间，“胡玩”每天向胡同居民和外来访客开放，同时组织了四场绘本阅读和捐赠活动。参观设计周的来访者带来了他们的孩子和自家的多余绘本和玩具。这些绘本图书捐赠给胡同社区，而胡同的小朋友也和参观设计周的小朋友一起，阅读图书，拼装玩具，在海洋球池里玩耍。

During Beijing Design Week, Hu-play was open to local residents and the visitors. There were several book reading and book exchange sessions hosted in the venue. The visitors of design week brought many books and toys for hutong community. The children read, played and enjoyed the space happily together regardless of whether they are neighbours or strangers.

“胡玩”是一个城市存量空间改造的微创手术。这个空间快速而便捷的满足了胡同居民的需求，成本可控，增强了设计周活动和本地社区的联系，完美呼应了“暖城行动”的主题。我们希望“胡玩”能够留在胡同里，找到合适的方式运营下去，变成胡同新生活的一部分。

Hu-play is a micro-invasive operation for the Hutong rejuvenation. This small renovation project offers a place specific for kids who before can only play in the narrow alleys. It is low cost and took only one day to setup. It connects local residents with outside visitors. We hope Hu-play can remain active in the neighbourhood after the 2018 BDW.
