工作室仅有两间3.6米宽，7.2米深，3.6米高大小的空间，面积约51.8平方米。需要容纳一个独立的办公空间（3.3×3.6m），18个工作学习的位置，至少12个普通书柜大小的藏书空间，以及用于会议或讨论的空间。

This studio only have two rooms, each 3.6 x7.2×3.6m (W*L*H) , approximately 51.8m2 footprint. It should meet the needs of multi-function which include an independent office (3.3 x3.6m), 18 seats for work/study, more than 12 bookshelves and the space for meeting or seminar.

首先确定采用开放建筑的理念和方法来完成这个近乎不可能完成的任务——极限空间的设计。
采用40×40的方钢管制作支撑体（Skeleton）
采用指接板打制可拆合单元（台面、储物柜或书柜）（Infill）
采用可适应的原则进行组合，同时保证灵活变化和弹性使用

The main challenge of this project is how to complete the impossible mission in the extreme space. First of all, the architects determined to apply the idea of Open Building as following,
– 40 x40mm square steel tube as support body (Skeleton)
-the detachable units made by finger-joint board, including table-board, cabinet for store or bookcase (Infill)
-combine units which apply the adaptive principle, thus ensure meet the needs of the diversified space and using

3.6米的层高不能简单划分为两层，因此竖向（z轴）空间采用错层——Z字形，保证人使用的空间净空高度大于2.2米。
18个座位上下两层布置，沿墙边每层必须安排9个座位，由于进深的限制，采用Z字形构架可充分利用上下两层的空间，提高纵深（Y轴）方向的空间利用，同时满足工作台的合理间距。
开间（X轴）方向靠墙的部分降低”书架“的高度，构建二楼的步行通道，与二层的台面齐平，将二楼各个相对独立分隔的座位串联起来，便于了二楼学生/员工的交流，也减少了爬梯的数量。

The vertical space with 3.6m height could not be divided into two stories directly. It results in the application of the zigzag floor structure (Z axis) to ensure the clearance height of each story is more than 2.2 meters.
The studio has 18 workstation which means each floor must arrange 9 seats along the wall . It is the using of zigzag structure ( Y axis) that can make the best use of the space of the upper and lower floors. It also ensure the reasonable distance between two desks.
The bookshelves which locate along the wall become the passageway of the upper floor by reducing the height of bookshelf. The passageway connect each independent seat together which is convenient for the communication between students / employees. It can not only reduce the number of the ladders, but also maximize the use of the width (X axis).

走道尽端布置“楼梯”（盒子），其中一部楼梯可以作为书架，非常深的盒子又可以作为图纸图筒的存放空间，另一部楼梯则更似箱子，又大又深可以存放测绘仪器等物件。这两处楼梯也是休息阅读的地方，临窗的箱子楼梯利用双层窗帘作为摄影的背景布——黑布靠外，白布靠里，可以用于一般的人像和模型的拍摄。

Two stairs, which located at the end of the corridors, are two boxes, one can be used as a bookshelf or storage space as it large depth, another can hold many objects such as surveying and mapping instruments as its large capacity. These two stairs also can be used as places for reading and rest. The stair near the window with double curtain (outside black cloth and inside white cloth) can be used as the background of photography, which can satisfy the requirements of normal portrait photography and physical model photography.

会议讨论空间采用可以单边、双边折叠收放的工作台。完全折叠、单边折叠以及完全展开的尺寸分别为10cm、50cm和90cm。靠边的地柜既是存贮文本的档案柜，也是会议的座凳。

The space for meeting and discussing has a special workbench which can be fold unilaterally or bilaterally, which the width is 50cm and 10 cm separately. When it completely deploy, the width is 90 cm. The floor cabinet is the file cabinet and the bench as well.

工作室倡导“读万卷书”，也要“ 行万里路”。王希孟的青绿山水画《千里江山图》中连绵逶迤的山峦，既壮阔雄浑而又细腻精到。青山叠翠之间的林木村野、茅棚楼台、舟船桥梁，，让人有寄居或游走其间之感。读行千里江山正吻合工作室的求知理念。

It is the top ideal for people to read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles. The content of Chinese traditional painting, Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains (Qianli jiangshan Tu Juan) by WANG Ximeng, which have continuous mountains with forest, village, thatched hut, a long river with boat and bridge, makes the reader feel to settle or ramble in it. Reading and travelling just match the concept of seeking knowledge in the studio.

图中这些人与物虽然繁复，但各自有序，布局井然。下面的聚落和上层的峰峦一样，变化多端，实则为原型加变体的组合形态（其间的聚落和民居分别见诸于刘敦桢的《中国古代建筑史》和谭刚毅《两宋时期中国的民居与居住形态》）。

Although these people and things in the painting are complicated, each of them have their order and arrange well. The various settlement and the mountains are actually combination forms of prototype and variant (more details for settlement and dwelling please refer to Ancient Architectural History of China by LIU Dunzhen, Study on the Dwellings and Settlements of China in the period of North Song and South Song Dynasties by TAN Gangyi)

因此工作室的形式语言从图中众多的山峦形象取样（类型化），作为面对面工作台面的分隔（“案”山）、里外间空间的隔断、墙上的贴士板（“璧”山）。吊顶采用阳光板雕镂出一个负形的山体（“云”山），高悬在上，取山之高远之势。

Therefore, the pattern language of the studio takes sample of the figure of multi-peaked mountains and categorize them, then take as prototype for design. Such as the division of workbench on the upper floor (mountain on the table), the tip plate on the wall (cliff mountain) and the partition for the independent office. The ceiling is make by hanging PE board which cut into the negative form of mountain. It looks like cloudy mountain which symbolizes high-away (Gao Yuan).

隔间的木格栅为前景的山形，后面玻璃隔断为喷砂处理的山峦形态，近山与远山叠合，分别取山的平远和深远之意。

The wooden grilles of compartment and the glass partition behind them look like mountains in different distance. These mountains images combination have profound meanings, long-away (Ping Yuan) and deep-away (Shen Yuan), which are other two aesthetic conception of mountain in Chinese traditional painting.

面对面工作台面的采用两片山形的木板分隔，当坐下时，两人可以彼此交流，当站立起来时，“山顶”的书柜便阻隔两人的视线。两块山形隔板中间可以种植盆栽，或收藏接线板或其他工具，其中一侧开有”山洞“，便于取用。两块山形隔板鼎立着上空的储物柜或书柜，在下面看来有如兀峰突起。

The face to face workbenches on the upper floor are separated by two pieces of wooden board with mountains shape. When the users sit, they can talk to each other directly. When they stand up, the cabinet on the top of the “mountain” will block the views of the users. Between the separation boards, users can cultivate pot plant or collect sockets or other tools. Above the separation boards, there have lockers and bookcase which look like prominent rocks.

无论坐立于桌前，或行走于靠墙的狭窄”驿道“，都能看到层峦叠嶂，远近高低都不同。工作空间虽然逼仄，但也要引人入胜。在工作室中品读感悟万卷书，胸怀千里江山路。

Whether sitting at the table or walking on the narrow corridor in the studio, users always can see layer upon layer of peaks and knolls. The room is limited, but the space is fascinating. The design of the studio is tend to encourage users read more books and comprehensive them, meanwhile, remind them to cherish lofty ideal in mind.
